M is for marvelous and magnificent, all words which attempt to describe our past weekend at Magnetic Island! We spent this past Saturday on Maggie Island which is about a 20 minute ferry boat ride from Townsville. It was soooo awesome! We had to get up pretty early and drive down to the dock and catch the ferry at 7:05 am. We went on a 2 hour horseback ride thru both the bush and along the beach. This is one of those activities I always dreamed about doing one day but never really knew when it would happen.

Riding along the beach and in the water was almost indescribable. But anyways, we rode thru some property and saw really pretty butterflies and wallabies along the way. It was one of our friend, Rho’s, first time to ever ride a horse.

Needless to say she was a little nervous but did very well with it! Along the ride, I asked one of the owner ladies what all wildlife was on the island and she said if we did The Forts walk that we were pretty certain to see koalas. I didn’t even know there were koalas up North so that was pretty exciting. We decided we would grab lunch and then walk the trail. So we walked down to horseshoe bay which was pretty nearby to the horse ranch.

We ate lunch around the park area on the beach and while we were there someone had attracted several Rainbow birds.

There were people flocking around to take photos and we certainly weren’t shy. We had a long photo shoot and playtime with the birds too!
Next we caught a bus to the Forts walking trail. Within 75 feet of being on the trail we already spotted a koala!!

It was lazily sleeping which they usually do for about 20 hours of the day due to their poor diet of strictly eucalyptus leaves.

Luckily we saw the koala right away because it turned out that was the only one we saw. It was soooo neat to see one in its natural habitat. We took several photos and progressed on. The walking trail had some breathtaking views of the beach below and lots and lots of beautiful scenery as well. On our way back down the trail, the koala had woke up which was a real treat because we got to watch it eating and crawl around a bit! Then we caught the bus back to the dock to catch a ferry back to Townsville. It was an overall magnificent day!!
